Function of Department

The function of the Criminal Prosecution Service is to represent the state in prosecuting criminal cases and to ensure that justice is done in accordance with the law. Its core responsibilities include the following:

Prosecution of Criminal Cases

Conduct criminal trials on behalf of the state.

Present evidence before the courts against accused persons.

Argue for conviction and appropriate punishment based on law and facts.

Ensuring Fair Trial

Safeguard the rights of both the victim and the accused.

Ensure that trials are conducted fairly, impartially, and within a reasonable time.

Legal Scrutiny of Investigation

Examine police investigation reports (e.g., challans).

Advise police on legal requirements and shortcomings in evidence.

Ensure that charges are legally sustainable before a case is taken to trial.

Coordination with Law Enforcement

Work closely with police and other investigative agencies.

Provide legal guidance during the investigation of complex or sensitive cases.

Upholding Public Interest and Rule of Law

Act independently and objectively in the interest of justice.

Avoid malicious or politically motivated prosecutions.

Victim and Witness Support

Facilitate protection and cooperation of witnesses.

Coordinate for victim support services where applicable.
